Taxis are readily available in most areas. If you're new to Kuwait or going to a new destination, it's advisable to use Google Maps to find where you are going. This is particularly useful if you're unable to provide verbal cues (i.e. can't speak Arabic) to the driver about where you're going and which direction to take. Showing the driver the map and directions on Google is the easiest way around any language barrier.

Taxi rates differ but if you're going to a destination outside of your immediate area don't forget to request that the driver turn on the meter. You can also discuss and negotiate the price of the trip prior to getting in the taxi. This is great for trips to the airport or popular places that are further away, such as The Avenues Mall.

Buying or leasing a car

Once you have a Kuwait driver's licence you can either lease or buy your car. There are many companies to choose from and many dealers have cars for sale and lease. Leasing is more expensive than buying a car; however, it also includes vehicle maintenance and road side assistance. Also, in the event of an accident, you'll be given a replacement vehicle immediately.

If you chose to buy your own vehicle, the dealership usually arranges the registration for two years. After that, you can return to the dealer to renew the registration. Both new and used cars are available for purchase. Buying a car requires an income verification form from your employer in addition to passport copies and bank account information so that automatic transfers can be arranged. The process takes a few days, but when you pick up your vehicle all formalities will be finalised. Other options are financing through your bank or cash payment to the dealer.

Driving in Kuwait can be a bit daunting. Traffic here may give the impression that's free for all but don't get too carried away ' there are plenty of speed and red-light cameras on the main roads. The cameras will also pick up on changing lanes too fast.

Private drivers

Many Kuwaitis and expats choose to hire private drivers. This can be costly as the employment of a driver typically includes paying for a flight home once per year plus living expenses and the purchase or lease of the vehicle. However, many taxi drivers will give you their card. If you find one you like, you could arrange a regular transportation and payment system with them without taking them on as your personal driver.
