Water, electricity and gas in Mauritius
Water, electricity and gas supply will be of major concern if you're looking to rent or buy a property in Mauritius. The following article is here to help.
Water supply
Water is supplied to households and commercial premises by the Central Water Authority (CWA). It is estimated that 98% of households receive running tap water in Mauritius. The water is properly treated at the source and is potable. However, during periods of heavy tropical rains and mudflows, water can be contaminated, resulting in a brownish tint. During these periods, it is advisable to avoid the consumption of tap water and opt for bottled water instead. Alternatively, you can also boil the tap water prior to its consumption.
Electricity
The voltage of household outputs is 220 V. The electrical sockets are usually similar to the ones found in the United Kingdom but the standard European socket is also used in many buildings. Thus, it is recommended to own an adapter. Plugs, extension cords and adapters are available in hardware stores, supermarkets, as well as DIY stores. During the tropical cyclone season, a generator can come in handy.
Gas
There is no "town gas" system in Mauritius. If you are using gas to cook, you will have to buy 6, 12 or 40 kg gas cylinders. The available cylinder types are red ones (purchaseable at Total filling stations), blue ones (available at Shell gas stations), and yellow ones (these are becoming increasingly rare on the market). The cap valve (referred to as "gas regulator" in Mauritius), differs from one colour to another. Prices are fixed: as an example, the 12 kg gas cylinder costs Rs. 270.
