Inquires about working in Mauritius and standard of living there

I am about about coming from Nigeria to Mauritius on a work visa, from an Agent as a bell boy. Please i want to know if i am making the wrong or wright decision, i need advice please.

You are taking  the wrong decision because you have been scammed by your agent. Mauritius does not deliver work visa . You need both a work permit and a resident permit to come and work on the island if you are not a professional.

Yes, i am talking about the work permit,  he is given me the work permit,. I am not a professional also, am i endsgering myself? He promised the work of a bell boy. Can this be a form of Medern slavery for me?

He can't  give ( or issue) you  a work permit - It is the ministry of Labour which delivers the permit . You have been scammed- no way you will be allowed to work as a BellBoy.

Is your agent Nigerian or Mauritius or someone else?
How much money have you given him so far?

I HAVE NOT GIVEN HIM ANY money, he is only given me the information  that he can get me a work in the hotel or restaurant,  either bellboy or waiter etc. AND HE will give me the work visa and also book my flight, after i have seen my documnts beofre i will pay him his demanded cash of 2.2

FWIW: There is NO WORK VISA for Mauritius.
No way a foreigner would be allowed to work as a bellboy or waiter or driver or whatever jobs that a local can do  unless you are coming as a group to work as manual labour in the rag business or construction or canning industry under a work permit delivered by the Ministry of Labour.

Money has not been exchanged yet BUT you are expected to pay him once he provides you with fake documents.
On the day that you are supposed to take your flight to the island , the agent will be nowhere to be seen and you won't be able to contact him.

Thanks so much for this information, its good am here.

Omobaj, You should share the above information with as many people as possible in Nigeria. I thank you on their behalf. I know quite a few who have sadly lost earnings of a lifetime with these fly-by-night agents. With a group of friends, we helped a few Nepalese some time back. That was terrible

YES the information was really useful to me, since i almost got lured and was tempted to do its, since i was given options of job such as Waiter, bell boy, security etc. So i came here and made my research before i go into this, because the person who linked me is claiming the perosn giving me the job is an HR

Hi , you have definitely been scammed. Mauritius is a VERY difficult country to gain permission to enter. Just to give you an idea, I am British , my wife is British born but her parents are Mauritian. My wife has full Mauritian citizenship, Mauritian passport, and Mauritian ID card. Despite all this, even we are not allowed to live or work in Mauritius. We have tried numerous times, but the Immigration Dept repeatedly tell us to F*** Off. 😂
We have given up trying to get permission now. It is almost impossible to get entry to Mauritius unless you have millions and millions of pounds/dollars/euros and don't mind giving some of it to the corrupt immigration officials. Anyway, good luck .

THANKS Very much bro, it show that the country is so complicated.

The fact that Mauritius has stringent immigration rules, like many other countries (even UK for that matter), does not make it a 'complicated country,! Here the rule of law prevails, unlike in Omobaj's Nigeria,
Immigration officials  can only give provisional entry clearance - they cannot decide on residence permits etc which are treated by the Prime Minister's Office...so I don't see how bribes will work here,
NB
I hold no brief for the Immig guys or the government of the day, but I just can't stand any Dick,Tom and Harry leveling unwarranted criticisms on us!

I understand  so well Hans, every country has their policy.

for the ministry to issue a work permit, you will have to satisfy a list of requirement and be given a minimum of RS 62,000 per month.

You are misleading people:

For an occupation permit delivered by the EDB ( formerly BOI)  that gives both the work and residence permit, the salary has to be Rs 60K or above for a professional outside  IT ( salary Rs 30K)

For a work permit delivered by the Ministry of Labour, the employer has to prove that there are no locals competent enough to do the work  and has to apply on behalf of his/her prospective foreign employee. Salary is below Rs 60K

please who is in mauritus?

Hello Everyone , i want to move to Mauritius . How soon can i get a job and It's Visa free for my Country. What are the questions Immigration do ask frequently.

Hello Anasewaa,

It is visa free when you come as a tourist. If you want to work, you can not do so on a tourist visa. You will need a proper job contrat and an employer willing to employ you and apply for your occupation permit.

Without knowing what qualifications you have, it is impossible to answer your question about work. Most people infact, find a job before coming here so as not to waste their money and go back home without a job.

Immigration will ask the purpose of visit and will require you to show your return flight ticket which needs to cover the length of your stay. Your passport should also have 6 additional months of validity from the day your stay ends.

All the best
