Travelling to Schengen with Ricevuta (for Permesso Renewal)

Hello everyone.

I just have one question. I'm supposed to travel to Germany in April. I recently applied for the renewal of my permesso and the date I got for the police verification is for the 30th of June. I was wondering if I can still travel to Germany and in case I do decide to travel and there is some issue with the documents, what is the procedure like then?

If any of you have had similar experiences, please help me out here!

The help will be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Once you are inside Schengen there are no checks for internal travel, so whether you have a carta or not is of no consequence. The whole concept of Schengen is to allow free travel between member countries.

Thank you for your response. For some reason, there is a very mixed response online. So if I am to travel to Germany from Italy via Flixbus, I can do so with my expired permesso and ricevuta?

I've travelled to France, Portugal, Greece and Latvia in the last twelve months and only ever used my passport as ID.  I have a PdS and Carta d' Identita. Only need them in Italy.

Oh okay. Thank you once again for your response. Our situations differ because I'm an Indian passport holder and my long term student visa expired last November. So there are chances of me being asked for my permesso or visa.

Thank you though. Have a great evening.

you cant travel Shengen  if you dont have a valide PDS . with "Ricevuta" you can only go to your country with a direct flight .

Hey, I'm currently having the same issue. I had never had an issue with it before, but a couple weeks ago our bus was stopped along the border of France and they almost made me return to Italy! I would say definitely make sure you have the ricevuta, and any other kind of documentation that proves your legal status in Italy, just in case.

Traveling with ricevuta has always been a problem unless to your home country

@sakshi_178 Hi Sakshi, I came across this thread when i was searching for the same information. The only solution i could find was to get a provisional or temporary permit from the questura to travel to other schengen countries, which needs a bunch of documents and waiting in lines.

I was wondering if you had found a solution for this.

Thanks!

@sakshi_178

I have this same question as well.

So my permesso di soggiorno is currently in process of being renewed and I travel next week to France. If I show my carta di identita and they ask for my passport, it is a brand new one with no stamps “of entry” because I have been living in Italy since 2018 and my last entry was in October 2020. But that passport with that entry date has now expired. So in theory, the passport I'd be carrying with me would be brand new with no entry stamps.  Would this a problem?

I'm thinking of taking my expired passport just in case if asked to show my entry stamp. I have not left Italy since 2020. Would I encounter any problems prior to exiting the airport?

I'd also be traveling with my minor child who does have Italian citizenship.

to be honest, I am a little worried, but hoping they are not as strict as we are in the EU.

Thanks in advance
@Pete.au

Could I only show my carta di identita upon entering France though? My Permesso is in process. My passport is brand new since my old has expired and the old passport is where my entry stamp would be. Would my brand new (and empty) passport be a problem?
@maddiethirupathy

I asked for a document or the sort and was told no.

@sakshi_178 hi I am wondering how your situation ended up? Did you travel with the receipt? I need to go to Portugal in September , I am Australian but my 90 days will end soon - I am waiting for my permesso di soggiorno appointment in October. So am hoping that the receipt I have is sufficient!

@claresull23 Hey, fellow Aussie wanting to know a bit more about this! Did your trip to Portugal go ok with just your receipt? or did you need to wait to be issued your permesso di soggiorno?

@Musicmels22 so do you mean if i have with me the ricevuta and my old permit reciept, i can travel to France because now i am confused, have already made plans but i have been seing different things online. I am also a student in italy.

@eomole55 Hi, I wanna ask how was your trip? Is it ok to use just ricevuta and an expired permesso to travel? Im going to Germany by plane with just ricevuta and Im little worrying if they're gonna ask for my permesso.

@Nguyen Quang4 it depends on which airport will you go by. I went to France this summer without a permesso di soggiorno (but my visa is still valid), they just opened my passport and stamped it. I went by Linate airport. I assume you're Viet so we have the same kind of passport. But other people I knew said that they checked it randomly on the bus so I'm not very sure about that. Maybe try to go to the questura and ask for the permesso earlier than the appointment date?

@Diem-Quynh Trinh Thank you for your reply!I think your case differs from mine since presumably, you made border entry into the EU through France right cuz you mentioned your passport was stamped. Unfortunately, it's impossible to ask for fastening the PdS process here and hence I think I will take the risk but I just want to know the consequence of being caught not having valid PdS lol. If it's more serious than just being deported to Italy then I'll consider staying in Italy this New year's eve.

Thank you Quynh once again <3

@Nguyen Quang4 hi... could you please let me know how did you end up? did you travel with the permesso receipt? I am an Indian with an Indian passport. I also have my Carta di identita and the patante italiana.  will these documents help?

@Mohan Sai Rapelly As I've read, as long as your passport is not in the category of those having exceptions to entry to the EU, and you don't have a Visa whatsoever then you can't travel in Schengen with just the receipt and a expired PdS. I asked the lawyer and they said the consequence of u being caught with an invalid document varies from being deported to just Italy to being deported to your original country and even going on the blacklist even when traveling between Schengen country members guarantee no passport check or border check, but sometimes they do the ambush (I met this situation once when landing in Poland). because of that I decided not to take the risk.

hi. good morning.

I can give you all the exact information regarding this topic. I had my expired permesso di soggiorno and have done my figure print also and I had a requirement that I needed to travel to Germany. I booked my flight and reached the airport and when I checked in, they asked me for a valid permesso di soggirno which I don't have, so they didn't allow me to board a flight.  but I found two solutions to travel with permesso di soggiorno receipt.

OPTION 1:  IF YOU DO THE ONLINE CHECK-IN WITHOUT CHECK-IN LUGGAGE, YOU CAN BOARD THE FLIGHT.

OPTION 2 (WHICH I HAVE CHOSEN): YOU CAN TRAVEL BY TRAIN BUT THERE WILL BE A BORDER CHECK EVEN IF YOU TRAVEL BY TRAIN, THEY DON'T ASK YOU FOR PERMESSO DI SOGGIORNO BUT SOME VALID DOCUMENTS IN MY CASE  I SHOWED THEM MY VALID CARTA DI IDENTITA.

THANK YOU HOPE THIS INFORMATION WAS USEFUL.
